Unlike their glass cousins, plastic bottles are usually discarded once they are used with only about 2% of them being re-cycled. But technology is now being developed to collect and re-use these bottles in an effort to conserve resources and preserve the environment.
Plastic bottles contain a substance called Polythylene Terephthlatate, or PET for short, which when re-cycled can be put to many uses. A complicated technical process, which involves purifying the bottles, releases high quality PET resin flakes which are melted at very high temperatures and spun into thread. The thread is then dyed and woven into intricately patterned carpets under the control of a computer.
