HOW TO PLANT PEPPERS: STEP BY STEP
Bonnie peppers leave our greenhouses with healthy foliage and well developed roots, at the right time for planting, but be sure that there is no more chance of frost before you plant. They are damaged by cold.
First, water real well before planting until you see the peat pot turn dark brown. Remove the label off the pot. You can put this in your recycling bin. Peel off the rim of the pot down to the soil level so that it can’t stick up out of the ground. If it does, the roots can dry out. Crumble the pieces into the hole or compost them. Now, tear off the bottom half of the peat pot to show some roots. This is so the plant starts out with some roots in direct contact with the ground. If the whole peat pot falls away, that’s okay.
Dig your planting hole to the right depth with a trowel. Set the pepper plant container deep. That is so the top of the pot is level with the soil surface. If you plant too deep, it could rot. Fill the hole around the transplant and gently pat the ground to tamp out any air pockets.
Plant peppers in soil enriched with compost, rotted leaves or other good organic matter. Peppers, especially Big Bells need moist fertile soil. Water it well to give the plant a good start and settle the soil. Mix Bonnie’s Herb and Vegetable Plant Food in the water to give you plants a boost.
