Foam fractionation is a method of separation which makes use of the bipolar properties of substances to separate them from a liquid solution. It is done by introducing gas bubbles from the bottom of a container of liquid. Bubble will rise due to buoyancy force and as the bubbles move up, targeted substances will adhere to the bubble and they will move up together. When they reach the surface of the liquid, a layer of foam is formed and this layer of foam can be easily removed by using physical means. Targeted substances will adhere to the bubble due to the bipolar properties. These substances have hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts. The hydrophobic region of these substances have the tendency to stick onto the gas-liquid interface of the bubble. Foam is formed when the buoyancy force is larger than the surface tension of the liquid. The equations to calculate buoyancy force and surface tension are shown. In this video, illustrations of the foam fractionation process is shown by treating water in a fish aquarium as an example. There are many factors which will affect the process. One of it is the pH level of liquid body. The amount of targeted substance which will adhere to the bubble is affected by the pH level. At the right range of pH, maximum amount of substance will adhere to the bubble. Bubble size also affects the process as different bubble size have different surface area. The smaller bubble size, the bigger the surface area and so the higher the adsorption rate. Gas flow rate determines how much bubbles are bubbled in at any time. The higher the gas flow rate, the higher the number of bubbles and so adsorption rate increases. Also, if targeted substance is non-surface active, it will adsorb to the bubble easily. Sometimes, foam fractionation is chosen over state of the art separation techniques like chromatography these methods of separation are very high cost and sometimes causes loss of variable yields. Foam fractionation on the other hand is a simple, and economical method of separation. This method is also capable of separating substances that are in low concentration and it is also suitable for substances that are temperature sensitive. Foam fractionation has many application in industries especially in the pharmaceutical and food industries. This method is also frequently used in wastewater treatment. In the pharmaceutical and food industries, most of the substances that need to be separated are temperature sensitive and dilute. So foam fractionation is the best method of separation. In wastewater treatment, this method is used to remove surface active and non-surface active substances in wastewater. Non-surface active substances are removed by adding surfactants.
