Our group accomplished the task of creating a personal soft drink can collector that beat the design constraints and was overall aesthetically pleasing. The major design constraints that our group needed to address were: the can collector could not be used by our hands or feet, the can must actually be lifted off of the ground, the collector cannot rest on the ground before it picks up the can (like a shovel), lastly the collector must be created out of 100% recyclable material. To address those constraints we needed to figure out a way to create a device that acted like an insects feelers that would pick up the can without us physically making it. In order to accomplish this we needed to act as a carrier to the object, similar in the way that a watch sits on our wrist without us physically making it work. First off, we knew we could not use our hands or feet so we decided to use either the waist or our calves. We decided to strap an empty cardboard soda box to our calf muscle with a second piece of flat cardboard going through the box to create the flat surface that the can could adhere to. We then put a piece of Duct Tape on the very end of the flat surface which is what the can will actually stick to. We knew that the can had to be picked up and lifted off of the ground and that the collector could also not rest on the ground. To overcome this barrier we tied a string to the flat portion of the box so that after the can adheres to the collector we can simply pull up on the string (from our elbow) and the can will be lifted into the air.
We believe that our idea is very innovative and creative because it is a unique way to pick up a can with doing barely any work. This object could even be implemented on an animal or a small child, which has not been created before. The collector also displays great functionality because it actually worked every single time we tested it out. It is also very comfortable because all that the person has to do is strap it to their leg and they are ready to go. This object will not impede the carrier in any way which makes it also very safe to use. The carrier attaches to the calf and simply detaches with a strap the moment the carrier wants to take it off. Since the main adhesive is Duct Tape the collector could actually pick up any light type of trash such as paper, cigarette buds, plastic water bottles and more. After the can is picked up we actually have a build-in can container at the top of the device so you can easily place it in there until you find the nearest trash can. The can collector is aesthetically pleasing because it has a simple design and we use vibrant colors like teal, brown, and red. The device could resemble some form of biomechanics device like a prosthetic leg or arm. Our device is actually very strong because we reinforced sections of it with extra Duct Tape so this machine can be used numerous times without its form breaking down. In terms of the relationship to the human body our machine is the exact same length as the calf so it is not taking up a major section of the carriers frame. In terms of sustainability and ecology our can collector is 100% recyclable. Cardboard is very easily recyclable and the duct tape does take a little bit more time to break down but in the end it can be recycled.
There are a few additional techniques we could have implemented to increase our functionality and sustainability. We could have come up with some type of device that uses our waist since it is our center of gravity and would not affect our collector device in the same way that it does when attached to the calve. We could have also come up with other brainstorming ideas like using a tube to pick up the can instead of the cardboard box.
We only used two main materials cardboard a Duct Tape.
