The Hero Project was invited to run a digital media workshop with Primary School students at the Mallee Health Service Inc in Pinnaroo, as part of a long term regional engagement project.
The youth worked with green screen and compositing software to realize their vision of a plastic cup 3-D animation. What started as a challenging project, as most of the participants where dropped off by their parents as a kind of Sunday day care, turned into a creative and unique project. The somewhat involuntarily participating youth had difficulties to engage in the concepts of film making, as they wanted to create animations and were not interested in documentary making. And as some of them were hellbent on destroying all plastic cups within reach, we challenged the group to make a film about plastic cups Cup Man was born! The team took off, produced a story within a short time, storyboarded it and created their own animation set, oftne using the blue sky as a matte for their blue-screen color compositing. It was fabulous to see the group transform into a team within hours and make one of the most inventive Hero Project films to date.
A Mothers’ Son Suffering from Crohn’s Disease Invents the Pill Coater and Uses 3D Printing to Build the Prototype and Raise Funding on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/488515545/pill-coater-an-easy-sweet-way-to-swallow-medicatio
When a mother’s eleven (11) year old son was diagnosed with crohn’s disease, he needed to take a lot of medication. It was hard to swallow, so she was looking for ways to “sweeten the pill” for him.
An Invention is Born!
It was her son’s idea to cover the medication with chocolate. After validating with the pharmacist, she covered his daily dose of medication in chocolate a day in advance, and her son swallowed it like candies! That inspired her to invent a product that she named the “Pill Coater” to easily and safely cover the medication in chocolate at home.
3D Printing to Build the Prototype
She decided to use 3D printing to build a prototype and came to MatterThings 3D print shop to bring it to life. Her prototype was 3D printed over many hours on a MakerBot Replicator 1 & 2 using PLA (Polylactic acid or Polylactide), a food safe bioplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch.
She hopes to “sweeten the pill” for every child, parent and elderly person who is obliged to take medication and launched her campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds for manufacturing.
