Cornstarch Test Video 002: The following is a test video of something I hope to post later about my research project this fall in Nonlinear Dynamics. The audio is kind of embarrassingly horrible (hence why no sound). Does anyone have any suggestions of any non-vocal music that might go great with this video?
In the video, we see that we can actually get a sold object to bounce on top of a liquid medium due to the unique properities of dilants. The cornstarch is being oscillated by a custom shaker device till it undergoes nonlinear standing waves above certain critical amplitude. These nonlinear standing waves are called Faraday waves, which due to the edge effects of the container look like unusual grove or bumpy pattern. Cornstarch and other Dilatants, nonlinear shear thickening fluids, display the unique property becoming more vicious as they are accelerated more to the point that they almost like solids. Later in the video we see with enough pertibation the cornstarch actually forms what look like “living” blobs and can actually rise and build on itself for a short period of time.
